Who are we?

The program at Small Steps is directed by Lise Petricone, P.T., P.C.S., with Beth Teich, MA, TSHH, SAS, Educational Director.  Together Beth and Lise share over thirty years of experience working with young children and their families in Rockland County and New York City. Each classroom at Small Steps is headed by highly qualified NYS certified Early Childhood educators.

What do we do?

At Small Steps, our teachers provide your child with a loving and safe environment to grow and explore during their time away from their families. Each child’s individual timetable is taken into account and respected during their time at Small Steps.  Individual, small and large group experiences are provided for your child. Children learn to use their words, share, take turns, play with and listen to their peers, while enjoying fun learning experiences.

What does this mean for your child?

A child at Small Steps will have time in the classroom for both free play and structured activities, circle time, snack, music, art, gym and/or outdoor time. Circle is a time for the children and staff to come together and get to know each other through sharing and song. This is the time when we cover the days of the week, weather, colors, letters, numbers, seasons, and calendar. Each day also includes a time for reading a story together.  Our gym and outdoor time is also a period of free play giving children the physical exercise they need, in a safe environment.  During this time, children are sometimes offered structured activities that they can join.

A bit about our history and curriculum...

Small Steps opened in 1999 as an Early Intervention program, and 2004 brings the school to  Nyack, expanding to provide regular preschool classes for children 2-5 years old. The curriculum is designed to enhance your child’s independence intellectually and emotionally while providing a challenging, developmentally appropriate and fun-filled environment where children are nurtured, loved and respected. Opportunities for growth in social/emotional and language development as well as fine and gross motor skills are integrated into the curriculum.
